What is acne?

It is a very common condition, called pimples in lay terms, affecting teenagers and sometimes adults. It has the appearance of blackheads, whiteheads, pus-filled spots (pustules), lumps (nodules) and cysts, with scarring and pigmentation, affecting the face, neck, chest and back. In most patients, acne can impact on their confidence and self-esteem.

What is the cause of acne?

There is excess oil production from the oil (sebaceous) glands, which together with dead skin clog the hair follicles causing bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) to proliferate leading to formation of the acne spots.

How can acne be treated?

An initial consultation is required for assessing the severity of your acne and discussion of the treatment options.

There are 2 stages of treatment:

i) medical treatment: the first step is treatment of the inflammatory lesions or acne spots. This is vital as early treatment helps prevent scarring. One or more of the treatments below may be required and can take 6 months or even longer to get this under control. Some medications (especially isotretinoin) may require blood tests.

-creams or gels – oral antibiotics – spironolactone – isotretinoin/Roaccutane

ii) physical treatment: includes treatment of acne after-effects such as pigmentation and scarring. Some treatments can be started simultaneously (specialist creams or chemical peels) or subsequent to completion of medical treatment (laser resurfacing). Different treatment modalities and multiple sessions may be required for best results.

Acne in skin of colour patients can leave dark marks of pigmentation, which is highly concerning for them. Our Dermatologist is one of the very few doctors in the UK who has been trained in treating darker skin types and their concerns and thus can effectively address them.

We will go through your medical history and address any concerns and questions that you may have and discuss the risks and benefits of the treatment options with you.

A dermatologist can also recommend the best skin-care options for you. “Clear skin begins with a strong foundation of gentle skin care and daily sunscreen,” says Dr. Andrea Hui Austin, a dermatologist in San Francisco.

Many acne treatments dry your skin, so using an oil-free, noncomedogenic (meaning it won’t clog pores) moisturizer allows your skin to better tolerate them. Sunscreen is critical because dry, sensitive skin is even more prone to harmful UV rays, especially if you’re using a retinoid.
