Prominent ears

What are prominent ears?

Prominent ears, also known as bat ears or protruding ears, are a type of ear deformity where the ears stick out more than usual from the head. Prominent ears are generally considered to be cosmetic issue rather than a medical problem, although some people may experience psychological or social issue due to their appearance. This can lead to low self -esteem, teasing, or bullying.

What causes it?

Prominent ears can be caused by several factors, including:

1. Genetics: Prominent ears are often inherited from one or both parents. If one or both parents have protruding ears, their children are more likely to have them too.

2. Developmental issues: In some cases, the cartilage in the ears may not fold properly during fetal development, leading to the ears sticking out from the head.

3. Injury: Trauma to the ear, such as a blow to the head, can cause the ear to become deformed and stick out.

4. Improperly performed ear surgery: In some cases, surgery to correct prominent ears can make the problem worse if not performed correctly.
