Male breasts

What are male breasts?

Male breast, also known as gynecomastia, is a condition in which the breast tissue in men becomes enlarged, resulting in the appearance of breasts. Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts, and can occur in men of all ages, from infants to older adults. While gynecomastia is not typically harmful or associated with serious health risks, it can cause emotional distress and self-consciousness in affected individuals.

What causes it?

Gynecomastia is typically caused by an imbalance of hormones in the body, specifically an increase in oestrogen relative to testosterone. Oestrogen is a female hormone that is present in small amounts in men, while testosterone is a male hormone that is responsible for male characteristics such as muscle mass and body hair. When oestrogen levels increase, it can lead to the development of breast tissue in men. Some common causes of gynecomastia include puberty, aging, certain medications (such as steroids or anti-androgens), drug and alcohol use, and underlying medical conditions such as liver disease or hormonal imbalances. In some cases, the cause of gynecomastia may be unknown. It is important to speak with a healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause of gynecomastia and discuss appropriate treatment options.
